YVM Concert

What a wonderful day GLYS had at the Scotch Oakburn Senior Campus on Sunday July 6th 2014 with the Young Voices of Melbourne.

YVM musical director Mark O’Leary took the choristers through some fun warm-ups, some solfage and the beautiful Maori lullaby ‘Hine e Hine.’  The very entertaining Malcolm Dalglish wowed everyone with his funny anecdotes, creativity and wonderful instruments – the hammer dulcimer, spoons and ‘bones’.    His skill on these instruments is extraordinary!

After lunch YVM, GLYS and the Scotch Oakburn Junior Voices joined forces to rehearse Malcolm’s wonderful song ‘Sail Away’.  An amazing vocal sound was enhanced by the ‘fiddle’, percussion, dulcimer and piano.

The 4pm concert attracted a large audience who were extremely appreciative of the choral music on display.  GLYS performed 4 numbers – ‘Touch the Sky’ from the Disney film Brave, ‘Blackbird’ by the Beatles, Tim Minchin’s ‘Revolting Children’ from Matilda the Musical and ‘Waka Waka’, the theme song for the 2010 soccer World Cup.  The audience really enjoyed GLYS’s performance.

A special feature of the concert was that GLYS member Hanlon Innocent had organised it as a fundraiser for a Year 8 school project to raise money to purchase a keyboard for Ravenswood Heights Primary School in Launceston.  This school prior to the concert had no keyboards or pianos.  Along with the gold coin donation from audience members and the proceeds from a raffle which was drawn by GLYS member and Ravenswood Heights pupil Erin (who also happened to be a birthday girl) Hanlon managed to raise over $1800 and well and truly purchased the keyboard from Barratts Music in Launceston.  The extra funds will help pay for piano tutors at Ravenswood.

The choristers and their host families then concluded the day with a get together with pizzas and yummy home-made treats which disappeared very quickly after a big day of singing.

GLYS were fortunate enough to be involved in such a unique, fun and inspiring experience.  Young Voices of Melbourne are a stunning choir and it was a privilege to have them here in Launceston.
